The full-time math
Can reselling be a full-time job? Run your own numbers
Yes, reselling can be a full-time job, and whether it can be yours comes down to three of your own numbers. Your quit number divided by your profit per sale is the sales you need each month. Those sales set how many listings you make and how many hours a week you spend typing them. The worked example below, built on 2025 federal health-premium data, needs 305 sales and 381 listings a month.
How many sales a month do you need to resell full time?
The sales you need each month to resell full time are your quit number divided by your average profit per sale. Profit per sale is the sale price minus what you paid for the item, the marketplace fees, shipping and packing supplies. Use your average over the last twelve months, not your best sale. No quit number yet? Work out your quit number first.
Sales a month = quit number ÷ profit per sale
Example, not a forecast: the household in the quit number example needs $6,088 a month in profit from sales. Here's what that takes at five different profits per sale.
| Profit per sale | Sales a month | About a day | Listings a month (80% sell) | Listing hours a week (6 min each) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | 609 | 20.3 | 761 | 17.6 |
| $15 | 406 | 13.5 | 508 | 11.7 |
| $20 | 305 | 10.1 | 381 | 8.8 |
| $30 | 203 | 6.8 | 254 | 5.9 |
| $50 | 122 | 4.1 | 153 | 3.5 |
Basis: the example quit number on this site (2025 AHRQ MEPS-IC average single premium, an assumed 27% tax rate). Days use a 30-day month; weeks use 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 a month. Every figure is arithmetic you can rerun in the quit number calculator.
How many listings does full-time reselling take?
Full-time reselling takes more listings than sales, because not everything you list sells. Your listings a month are your sales a month divided by the share of your listings that sell. If 80% of what you list sells, 305 sales take 381 listings. Items that never sell still cost listing time, so they belong in the count.
Listings a month = sales a month ÷ share of listings that sell
Take the share from your own records: items sold over the last twelve months divided by items listed. The 80% in the example is an example, not a benchmark.
How many hours a week do full-time resellers spend listing?
Listing hours for a full-time reseller are listings times minutes per listing. In the example, 381 listings a month at 6 minutes each is 38 hours a month, or 8.8 hours a week. That's the typing alone. Sourcing, cleaning, photos, packing and admin come on top, so time them the same way.
Listing hours a week = listings a month × minutes per listing ÷ 60 ÷ 4.33
| Minutes per listing | Hours a month | Hours a week |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 44.4 | 10.2 |
| 6 | 38.0 | 8.8 |
| 5 | 31.7 | 7.3 |
| 4 | 25.4 | 5.9 |
Every minute you cut from a listing is worth about 6.3 hours a month at this volume, roughly 1.5 hours a week. That makes minutes per listing one of the few inputs in the quit math you can change without selling more.
How can you cut listing time?
Cutting listing time comes down to typing less per listing. eBay's own tools include a flow where you describe the item and eBay starts the listing from similar items, a bulk listing tool eBay suggests for sellers with 100 to 250 items, and an AI photo-upload tool eBay calls best for items that tend to be standardized, such as trading cards (eBay Seller Center).
FlowLister, which we make, turns your photos into a complete eBay listing: the title, description, category, item specifics, price and shipping, in about 30 seconds. It prices from recent eBay sold listings and publishes to eBay through eBay's official Trading API. It's AI, so it misses things, and your review time is real time. For comparison, time how long one listing takes you to type by hand.
Whatever you use, time ten listings in a row from blank form to published, divide by ten, and put that into the calculator's minutes-per-listing box. Your minutes are the only ones that count.
What about the income figures you see online?
The income figures you see online for full-time resellers are self-reported. They come from the sellers who chose to share, and nobody independently checks them.
We found no independent survey of full-time reseller income. Twelve months of your own sales are better evidence than anyone's screenshot, and they're the only numbers that fit your costs.
What does full-time reselling cost that part-time didn't?
Full-time reselling moves costs onto you that a job used to carry or split. Each one raises the quit number, and with it the sales, listings and hours the plan takes.
| Cost | At a job | Reselling full time |
|---|---|---|
| Health insurance | Employers paid 79.9% of the average single premium in 2025 | You pay the whole premium. COBRA can charge up to 102% of the plan's cost |
| Social Security and Medicare | You pay 7.65% and your employer pays 7.65% | You pay 15.3% on 92.35% of net earnings |
| Income tax | Withheld from every paycheck | Four estimated payments a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more |
| Inventory | Not your problem | You keep buying stock through slow months |

Does the math still work in your slow months?
The reselling math has to work in your worst months, not your average ones. When profit per sale and the share that sells both drop, sales, listings and hours all rise at once. In the example, a slow stretch at $15 a sale with 70% selling needs 406 sales and 580 listings a month: 13.4 hours a week of listing at 6 minutes each. The income floor test shows how to read your worst months before you quit.
How do you test full-time reselling before you quit?
A cheap test of full-time reselling is a week of leave run at full-time pace. Time every listing, count what sells, and write down where the hours go. One week won't show you a season. It does replace guesses about minutes per listing and daily output with your own numbers, and every figure on this page runs on those.
