What changes when you go full time

4 min read

Going full time changes three things on day one: nobody withholds your tax, the admin lands on you, and the structure a job gave your week disappears. The money is the part the calculator covers. These are the parts it doesn't.

Who pays your tax when nobody withholds it?

When nobody withholds your tax, you pay it yourself during the year. The IRS says sole proprietors generally have to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more when they file, and those payments cover self-employment tax as well as income tax (IRS).

Source: IRS Publication 505 (2026). Read 2 October 2026. You generally avoid the underpayment penalty by paying the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's (110% if last year's adjusted gross income was over $150,000, or $75,000 if you're married filing separately).

Make it mechanical: a separate account, a fixed percentage moved into it the day money arrives, and never touched. Leaving it to good intentions risks a shortfall at the due dates, and the IRS can charge an underpayment penalty (IRS). A tax professional can be worth the fee in your first year.

How much time does reseller admin take?

Reseller admin takes real time, and it grows with sales. Messages, offers, returns, bookkeeping, supply runs and the post office were spread across other people at a job. Now they're yours.

Budget hours for admin before you quit. Track it for two weeks while you're part time and scale it to the volume in your full-time math.

What happens to structure when you work for yourself?

Structure disappears when you work for yourself. A job supplies a start time, an end time, people who notice, and priorities someone else sets. All of it goes at once. The fix is structural, not motivational:

  • Set working hours and stop at them. Without an end time, work expands until it damages everything else.
  • Keep work and home apart if you can, even if it's one table and one shelf.
  • Plan the week on a fixed day instead of deciding each morning.
  • Put other people in your week on purpose. Working alone is a real cost.

Why does every hour start to feel priced?

Every hour feels priced when you're self-employed, because an unproductive afternoon now costs you sales. That's clarifying, and it can make rest feel expensive. Skipped rest is a route to burnout.

Schedule time off in advance and treat it as a fixed cost of running the business, not a reward you earn. Nobody else will schedule it for you now.

How do you handle uneven income?

Uneven income can be easier to live with when you pay yourself a fixed amount. A salary smooths the swings. Without it, a slow fortnight lands on your mood as well as your bank balance. Paying yourself a set monthly amount from the business account, instead of spending whatever arrived, puts some of that smoothing back.

What gets better when you resell full time?

Plenty can get better, starting with a direct link between effort and result, your choice of what to sell, and control of your own time.

  • The link between effort and result is direct
  • You choose what to sell, what to source and what to turn down
  • Your time is yours to arrange: appointments, school events, quiet mornings
  • The skills and the business are yours, and they go where you go
  • No commute, and no meeting that should have been an email

When should you review the decision to go full time?

Review the decision to go full time on a date you set before you start. Pick a day twelve months out and write down now what would make you consider a job again. The decision then gets made by the person who isn't anxious or exhausted, and going back becomes a planned option instead of a defeat.

How do self-employed people pay tax?
Through estimated payments during the year. The IRS expects sole proprietors to pay estimated tax if they expect to owe $1,000 or more, covering income tax and self-employment tax. Moving a fixed percentage into a separate account the day money arrives makes the payments easier to meet.
When are 2026 estimated tax payments due?
April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027, per IRS Publication 505. Each payment covers income earned in the period before it.
What's hardest about reselling full time?
It depends on you, but structure and company are easy to lose. A job supplies start and end times, colleagues and set priorities, and all of it goes at once. Fixed hours, a planning day and time with other people help.
Should I pay myself a fixed amount from my reselling business?
Yes. Paying yourself a set monthly amount instead of spending whatever arrived puts back some of the smoothing a salary gave you, and it can make uneven sales easier to live with.
